BeachMint's Big Data Deployment a Breeze with Pentaho

Fashion and style ecommerce company optimizes Facebook and Twitter data for operational advantage

October 2, 2012, — Delivering the future of business analytics, Pentaho Corporation today announced that  BeachMint, which sells jewelry, clothes, shoes and beauty supplies online with the help of celebrities who interact with customers on social media web sites, has implemented Pentaho Business Analytics to handle its big data, business analytics and data integration  needs.

BeachMint is using Pentaho Business Analytics, MySQL and HP Vertica to quickly slice and dice terabytes of “big data” and millions of daily emails, plus record click stream data. Pentaho Business Analytics provides reporting, dashboards, analysis, data visualization and predictive analytic capabilities to help with social monitoring, customer retention, financial reporting, product and website optimization and more.

According to Director of Business Analytics  Doug Cohen, BeachMint has implemented Pentaho for its ability to easily scale, handle big data requirements and compete with sophisticated, proprietary solutions on interactive, self-service business analytics and data integration functionality. Cohen’s work has helped to operationalize more than one terabyte of data for the rapidly growing online retailer.

For example, BeachMint uses Pentaho to help keep close tabs on its large Facebook and Twitter communities to track data such as fans, likes, favorites, customer product reviews and comments. Through social monitoring of online forums, BeachMint recently identified a coupon code that had leaked out and was being used by customers. Business alerts were set to report on high activity for coupon codes; the problem was spotted and resolved in just two hours and no damage was done.

"For cost-conscious start-ups, Pentaho and open source are a no brainer for enabling rapid scale. You can easily compare it to proprietary tools that might not even work,” said Cohen. “I’ve been doing analytics in other industries such as gaming and advertising for years and have seen situations where coupon errors went on for days with hundreds of thousands of dollars lost. Using Pentaho, we are able to keep close tabs on the pulse of our online communities.”

“For BeachMint, the ability to analyze its big data sets has really positioned it ahead of its retail peers – both on- and offline,” said Rosanne Saccone, chief marketing officer at Pentaho. “This young, fast-growing company has found a true competitive advantage using big data analytics. It allows them to identify cross-selling revenue opportunities, develop loyal and profitable customer relationships, and run the overall organization more efficiently and cost effectively.  From big data access, preparation and integration, to interactive visualization, analysis and prediction, Pentaho allows BeachMint to harvest meaningful patterns buried in big data.”

Pentaho Business Analytics combines data integration and business analytics into one platform so IT and business users can easily access, integrate, visualize and explore any data to positively impact business results.  It offers unmatched native support for the most popular big data sources including Vertica, as well as Hadoop, NoSQL databases and other analytic databases.
