University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine deploys Pentaho to create evidence-based treatment protocol for more aggressive treatments and to keep patients on their therapeutic targets
August 16, 2012, San Francisco — Delivering the future of business analytics, Pentaho Corporation today announced that the Bedlam Longitudinal Clinic, a branch of the Medical Program at the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine in Tulsa has incorporated Pentaho Business Analytics into its teaching curriculum. The Community Health Clinic uses Pentaho Business Analytics as a feedback tool for teaching panel management to collaborative teams of medical, nursing, pharmacy and social work students.
Using customized Pentaho reports, medical students track vital statistics for chronically ill patients, such as blood sugar, blood pressure and cholesterol levels for diabetes patients. The reports let the students see how panels of patients respond to specific treatments and then design corresponding interventions, such as increased frequency of clinic visits, to try and affect better outcomes.
Overall, Pentaho has provided the Bedlam Clinic with an evidence-based treatment protocol that translates into more aggressive treatments, such as increasing the dosage of medications every two weeks instead of every three months. Students are able to view and analyze data from an entire panel of patients, provide consistent and preventive care without requiring patients to be present and help them move toward their therapeutic target.
“We are moving from taking care of patients in an office to looking at an entire panel of patients and caring for them wherever they are,” said Dr. Ronald Saizow, Professor of Medicine, Associate Dean of Academic Programs, University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine. “With Pentaho, we can see which patients are moving toward therapeutic targets and which are not and call those individuals into the clinic as needed.”
“Dr. Saizow is a trailblazer in the fields of patient care and medical teaching with this innovative use of business analytics,” said Rosanne Saccone, Chief Marketing Officer, Pentaho. “With transparency and accessibility of data provided by Pentaho Business Analytics, his medical students are at the cutting-edge in designing and implementing creative healthcare solutions with tangible results for patients.”
