Powering Good Through the American Heart Association COVID-19 Data Challenge

In times of great crisis like the one we find ourselves in today, we are each called to help. For some, it is small efforts like following shelter-in-place guidelines or cheering at the designated hour for the hardworking healthcare professionals who are caring for the sick. For others, it can be repurposing building spaces for makeshift hospitals and treatment centers.

At Hitachi Vantara, our commitment to “Powering Good” drives us to do what we can to solve both business and societal challenges.

Over the past two months of the COVID-19 pandemic, we have donated masks to protect frontline healthcare workers and webcams to support communication between isolated patients and their families. But we wanted to do more…

We believe access to data is the key to accelerating the search for new treatments for COVID-19.

Today, in collaboration with the American Heart Association and BurstIQ, we’ve announced a new data challenge initiative to help top researchers use data to address unsolved questions about COVID-19 and accelerate breakthroughs. In particular, we are investigating the relationship between COVID-19 and other health conditions and disparities.

Through this challenge, global clinical and outcome data, as well as image datasets, will be made available to COVID-19 researchers via the American Heart Association Precision Medicine Platform, which we co-developed and launched in 2016.

Researchers may leverage the datasets hosted on the platform, their own data, and the platform’s state-of-the-art analysis software to accelerate research into new solutions that can quickly and effectively tackle healthcare threats like COVID-19.
